The Garden State has been a national leader in school funding equity. But the School Funding Reform Act of 2008 may change that. The new aid formula underfunds many New Jersey schools and programs and removes the historic Abbott "special needs" designation for poor, urban schools. In addition, the new formula does little to change New Jersey's over-reliance on local property taxes to fund education. Our Children/Our Schools seeks to inform the public debate on these important issues and advocate for high quality education for all New Jersey children.

School Funding and the Education Transition Report
The Education Subcommittee of Governor Christie's Transition Team released a report in January focusing in part on PreK-12 education and offering an array of recommendations to the new governor. How does the report address the issue of school funding?
Transition Team Recommends Review of High School Plans
Governor Christie's Transition Team subcommittee on education has recommended that the new administration revisit the High School Redesign plans left behind by the Corzine Administration, citing concerns about district resources to meet new graduation requirements.
NJEOC Graduation For All Campaign Officially Launched
Over 70 people rallied in front of the Statehouse in Trenton on January 20 demanding "Graduation for All" for New Jersey's public high school students. NJEOC representatives also hand delivered campaign information to Governor Christie's office and later testified before the State Board of Education.

Showing Support for High Quality Preschool
Supporters of early childhood education have wasted no time in advocating for preschool and childcare initiatives. Outreach to the new governor, acting Commissioner of Education, and state legislators began just after the November gubernatorial election and is ongoing.
Special Education Student Records and the "Inclusion" Lawsuit
New Jersey parents and guardians of special education students may be receiving letters from school districts concerning their children's special education records. Some records may be shared with attorneys for SPAN and other plaintiffs as part of a lawsuit seeking the least restrictive educational setting for special education students. Advocates stress that records will be kept strictly confidential, and services for individual children will not be affected.
