The
Joint Committee on Public School Funding has held seven public
hearings since it began its work on August 10. Committee hearings
have consisted of the presentation of testimony from a wide
variety of experts who have provided committee members with
background in many of the basics that are part of school funding.
The issues covered have included:
Office of Legislative Services presentation
on New Jersey’s school funding history (August 10);
An overview of how school funding issues
are managed in states across the nation (August 22);
Best practices offered by two school
districts including an Abbott district and a regularly operating
district (August 29);
Suggestions for cost cutting measures
made by a panel of New Jersey education stakeholder organizations
(September 5);
The special requirements and costs of
special education and the federal No Child Left Behind Act
(September 12); and
Methods to determine the cost of educating
a child – costing out (September 19).
