Joint Committee Continues Gathering Background Information.

The Joint Committee on Public School Funding has held seven public hearings since it began its work on August 10. Committee hearings have consisted of the presentation of testimony from a wide variety of experts who have provided committee members with background in many of the basics that are part of school funding.

The issues covered have included:

  • Office of Legislative Services presentation on New Jersey’s school funding history (August 10);
  • An overview of how school funding issues are managed in states across the nation (August 22);
  • Best practices offered by two school districts including an Abbott district and a regularly operating district (August 29);
  • Suggestions for cost cutting measures made by a panel of New Jersey education stakeholder organizations (September 5);
  • The special requirements and costs of special education and the federal No Child Left Behind Act (September 12); and
  • Methods to determine the cost of educating a child – costing out (September 19).

Transcripts of hearings and copies of presentations are available for review on the committee’s website.
